“Unintended Consequences, Environmental Health and Environmental Justice Knowledge” is a post-secondary podcast centred Open Education Resources (OER) curriculum about environmental health and environmental justice. This is a doctoral project with the University of British Columbia, Okanagan, Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies, Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies, Sustainability Theme.
Scholarly Personal Narrative (SPN) methodology was used, meaning stories, including the Project Lead’s own story, are used as data linked to larger themes and other scholarly work.
Greg Garrard was the Principal Investigator and Stephenie Hendricks was the Project Lead.
Four modules each contain a podcast, essays, curated materials, instructor guidance, outcomes, keywords, and a quiz. The modules can be used sequentially or each module can be stand alone within a variety of academic disciplines, including history, health, science, social justice, chemistry, finance, business, and others. This OER also assists independent learners with increasing their knowledge about environmental health and environmental justice.
Twenty unique interviews were conducted between June of 2022 and December of 2023. Seven additional narratives were obtained using existing archival footage.
The hope for this OER is that it will assist students in understanding their own paths as they navigate their roles in helping everyone to enjoy a healthier and more just future.
